Tension in Onitsha, As Truck Laden with Ammunitions Falls

By Izunna Okafor, Awka

There was a spark of tension in Onitsha, Anambra State recently, as a truck laden with ammunitions fell while the ammunitions accidentally poured on the road, and the driver of the vehicle was arrested by the state's Police Command.

Eyewitness account had it that as soon as the truck fell into a ditch around 5:AM and spilled its contents, live bullets littered the road, which the driver and his conductor, tried to gather together before the police arrived to arrest them.

According to the source, “The incident occurred on the Awka Road. It was discovered by those going to the church early in the morning. It has attracted heavy security presence to the road. The truck, a Mercedes Benz 911 model, was moving the goods out of Onitsha when the driver lost control and fell into a gutter."

The source further said that the driver and his conductor tried to quickly remove the contents of the truck, but they could not do much before daybreak when policemen arrived at scene and saw that the truck was carrying live bullets.

“The policemen called for a backup and arrested the truck driver, while his conductor escaped,” it added.

It was gathered that the army had come to the state police command to take the ammunition.

Disclosing that officers of the Nigerian Army have whisked away the ammunitions, the source said, “I heard a tipper was brought in by the army and the live bullets were taken away.”

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Police Command, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, noted that he had not been briefed about the incident, as at the time of filing this report.

“I have not been briefed about the incident. I will get back to you when I get the details," he said.
