The roof of the Event Centre attached to the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Women Association Bakery, has been completely blown off by rainstorm.

The roof of the building located right inside Nnamdi Azikiwe main campus in Awka, the Anambra State capital, was totally uncapped from the building and thrown away, following a heavy rainfall, which also caused many damages in the building.

Reacting to the development, the Chairperson of the Cooperative Boar of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Women Association (NAUWA), Prof. Gladys Ahaneku, who was visibly devastated after touring round the Centre to access the extents of damages done to the building, recounted how she received a call and report from the Manager of the Bakery Centre after the rainfall, that rain has done a catastrophic damage to the building.

Lamenting the hugeness of the damages, Prof. Ahaneku, who is also the wife of the immediate-past Vice Chancellor of the University, revealed that fixing the building to standard again will gulp over two million naira, especially in the face of the current economic realities in the country.

According to her, the place is an income-generating venture of the Association where food, snacks, drinks and other forms of refreshments are sold to the students and staff of the university.

On her own part, Professor Stella Okunna, who is a member of the Board said the place was a very vibrant and thriving centre when school was in session, revealing that she was speechless at the level of damage on the event centre.

Prof. Okunna, who called for collaborative efforts towards repairing the damages, also enjoined the people to always heed to the advisory report of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMeT), which had earlier given an advisory report of impending rainstorms in some parts of the country and asked Nigerians to take precautionary measures.

In their separate remarks, the Secretary of the group, Dr. Chitoo Ekwealor, explained that the Bakery was established in 2017, producing nutritional bread and refreshments for the University community and beyond; while another member of the board, Professor Ikechukwu Ekwealor, appealed for support from all and sundry, to enable them repair and get the Centre working again as soon as possible.
